In Jewish mythology, Lilith is depicted as the first wife of Adam, who was created at the same time and from the same substance as Adam. According to some sources, Lilith refused to submit to Adam and left him, refusing to return to the Garden of Eden after she left. Other accounts hold that Lilith was cast out of the Garden for refusing to obey Adam and for practicing magic.
In some versions of the story, Lilith becomes a demon or a monster after she leaves the Garden, and is often depicted as seducing men and causing harm to children. In other versions, she is depicted as a powerful and independent woman who refused to be subjugated by Adam or by God.
Despite the negative connotations that have been attached to Lilith in some versions of the story, she has also been revered as a symbol of female independence and sexuality. Some feminists have drawn upon the myth of Lilith as a way to challenge traditional notions of gender roles and to celebrate female empowerment.
